UCLG discusses about the implementation of the SDGs with the Youth network of the Assembly of European Regions

From 16 to 18 November, the Youth network of the Assembly of European Regions (AER - YRN) met in Cascais for a plenary session on the occasion of the European youth capital of Cascais. Under the theme "Glocal Youth", the participants discussed the local and global role of European youth, on topics such as "Democracy in the digital age" and "The role of youth in promoting the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda".

During the event, UCLG presented the working areas of the UCLG Forum of Regions and UCLG Learning. In addition, based on an example of a dynamic exercise with the municipality of Quito, its youth leaderships and the Administrative Budget Board, UCLG presented the importance of the work of both youth movements and local and regional governments for the social and political mobilization around the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as well as for their alignment, planning and monitoring in local policies. During the event, young people from the network shared their local and regional experiences related to the SDGs, as well as different strategies for communication and potential work collaborations between youth and regional governments.

Also present were AER-YRN President Gloria Vitaly; Cascais Environment Department Head Soraia Carvalho; and Council of Europe North-South Centre Youth Cooperation Programme Advisor Tullio Graziano. The AER-YRN, which also takes part annually in the United Nations High Level Political Forum, established SDG4 on the quality of education as a priority through strategic issues, such as free access to information and digital tools as a human right, sexual education, mutual respect and prevention against bullying in schools.
