It is with a most heavy heart that the global municipal family received the news of the untimely passing of the newly-elected Mayor of Johannesburg, Mr. Jolidee Matongo, who lost his life in a car accident.
The World Organization of United Cities and Local Governments mourns this terrible loss, only a few months after another tragedy that cost the life of the previous Mayor, Mr. Geoff Makhubo, due to COVID-19 complications.
We extend our deepest condolences to Mayor Matongo’s family, friends and colleagues. The people of Johannesburg are also in our hearts in what is proving to be a most trying year.
The involvement of Johannesburg in our Organization has always been of utmost importance to our network. At this time of grief, our Organization feels all the more like a family, and it is this sense of support, strength and solidarity that UCLG wishes to express.
Together we stand to continue the quest for a better future for all.
