UCLG Committee co-organises the International Meeting on the Right to the City

International Meeting on the Right to the City

The Committee on Social Inclusion, Participatory Democracy and Human Rights of United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) is pleased to invite you to the International Meeting on the Right to the City, which will take place from 12th to 14th November 2014 in São Paulo, Brazil.

This event has been co-organized by several actors of civil society and local government, such as Habitat International Coalition (HIC), the National Forum on Urban Reform (Brazil), Polis Institute (Brazil), the Brazilian Association of Municipalities (ABM) and the municipality of São Paulo, among others. The Committee on Social Inclusion, Participatory Democracy and Human Rights of UCLG is also one of the organizers of the event.

The International Meeting on the Right to the City aims to expand the debate on strategies to implement the right to the city and to fight against inequalities generated by the current accelerated urbanization process. At a time when more than half of the world's population lives in cities, dealing with this topic is more urgent than ever.

The main working axes will be:

  • Human Rights in Cities
  • Participatory and Democratic Governance in Cities
  • Urbanization and Sustainable Use of the Territory in Cities
  • Social Inclusion and Economic Development in Cities

Participants will also be invited to participate in the building of a Global Platform for the Right to the City, whose aim will be to reflect on the key principles, themes, commitments, goals and indicators to move forward this political agenda. This platform will be presented during the debates on the Post 2015 Development Agenda, at the United Nations Conference on Housing and Urban Development (Habitat III), as well as before global and regional human rights protection systems.

Speakers include experts, social leaders and public authorities from the following countries: India, Egypt, South Africa, South Korea, Portugal, United States, Germany, England, Spain, Mexico and Brazil.

The Committee on Social Inclusion, Participatory Democracy and Human Rights of United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) encourages all its members, including members of UCLG and members of others Committees, to participate in the International Meeting on the Right to the City. Registration is free of charge and can be done through the link available below.

We kindly ask local government representatives who wish to take part to the Meeting to contact the Committee as soon as possible. The Committee on Social Inclusion will try to make sure they have a speaking slot in one of the round tables of the event.
