Tribute to Cézar Busatto

It is with deep sadness that the UCLG family has received the news of the passing of Cézar Busatto, former Secretary of Political Coordination and Local Governance of Porto Alegre and Secretary of the Government of the State of Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil), economist, former Member of Parliament and university professor.

A particularly active member and representative of the international movement of local and regional government networks, Mr Busatto contributed greatly in facilitating the dialogue and work of networks such as Mercociudades, Flacma and UCLG, strongly promoting effective cooperation among municipalities.

Mr Busatto was also a key figure in the UCLG Committee on Urban Strategic Planning, which he co-led representing Porto Alegre, along with the city of Durban (South Africa), until 2017, promoting public space policies and participatory democracy, for which Porto Alegre, his city, became recognized worldwide.

His teachings will be with us and with the municipal movement forever. We will remember him with great respect and friendship, which we wish to pass on to his family and friends during this difficult time.
