New UCLG Co-President elected

Mauricio Rodas, Mayor of Quito

The World Council that met in Haikou on 26 November 2014 has appointed Mauricio Rodas, Mayor of Quito, Ecuador, Co-President of United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) until 2016.

A call for candidatures to fill the vacancy within the Co-Presidency was launched in late June, following the decision of the Executive Bureau in Liverpool to accept the resignation of Augusto Barrera as Co-President of UCLG. The call encouraged applications from the Latin American region.

The candidature of the Mayor of Quito, Mauricio Rodas, received support from many members of UCLG. Dr Rodas was elected Co-President by the World Council in Haikou, and was given a mandate to strengthen the presence of UCLG in Latin America; a region where the urban agenda is of crucial importance, and where lessons learnt from local and regional policies can be used as models for policies in other parts of the world.
