High Level Conference of the Mediterranean City to city Migration Project in Beirut

After nearly 3 years of work, cities part of the Mediterranean City to city Migration Project will gather at political level in the framework of a High Level Conference hosted by the Mayor of Beirut, Jamal Itani, on 7-8 November 2017.

The event will convene national governments, donors, relevant international organisations and stakeholders, as well as other local governments from the Mediterranean region to:

  • Share the experiences and learnings of the project: What are cities doing? What could they do? What do they need to be more efficient?
  • Present the main political recommendations: What should the commitment of each player involved be, from civil society to international organisations, as well as cities, regions and states?
  • Explore the way to follow up the work at Mediterranean level: How could cooperation, networks and peer learning events support and benefit the work of cities in migration-related issues?

About the Mediterranean City-to-City Migration Project (MC2CM)

The Mediterranean City-to-City Migration (MC2CM) project aims to generate and animate a network of South, East and North Mediterranean cities to discuss, exchange and learn about migration governance at local level and how to better achieve migrants‘ inclusion at city level, with a specific focus on human rights protection and access to basic services, in particular for youth and women.

In this framework, 9 cities (Amman, Beirut, Lisbon, Lyon, Madrid, Tangiers, Tunis, Turin and Vienna) have been involved in a series of activities since 2015. In particular, these cities have created or updated their city migration profiles (i.e a mapping including migrants background, and spatial repartition, services and policies for migrants inclusion, national framework, etc.) developed a city stakeholders‘ group on the topic, participated to a set of peer learning events and dialogues and implemented pilot project to provide better inclusion to migrants in their territories.

The project has covered the following topics: social inclusion (Lisbon, July 2016), employment (Madrid, November 2016), human rights and basic services (Tangiers, November 2016), refugees’ hosting (Vienna, February 2017), social housing and urban planning (Amman, April 2017), education (Turin, July 2017) and inter institutional coordination (to be organized in Lyon, December 2017).
