Haiti Solidarity : Local Governments at the International Summit for Reconstruction

On behalf of the cities gathered together in United Cities and Local Governments and the International Association of Francophone Mayors (AIMF), Gérald Tremblay, Mayor of Montréal and Vice-President of UCLG has expressed their will to participate actively in the efforts to reconstruct Haitian towns. At the occasion of a conference of governments who are friends of Haiti, assembled in Montreal thanks to a an initiative of the Canadian government, the Mayor made clear the readiness of local governments to work alongside all mobilized partners.

Gérald Tremblay, supported by Bertrand Delanoë, Mayor of Paris and President of UCLG and of the AIMF, presented the Prime Minister of Haiti and the Canadian Foreign Minister with a Declaration of support from these two organizations for the efforts in aid of the reconstruction of Haitian towns and cities.

This declaration constitutes a commitment on the part of the members of both organizations to investing all their efforts to create the optimum conditions in which to draw up a plan for the economic and social reconstruction of Haitian towns and cities, to gather funds for the implementation of this plan and to mobilize a bank of experts in the fields of municipal governance, urban planning and planning of infrastructure and municipal facilites.
