On 12 April in Barcelona, the first Agora of Cities is to be held, a meeting of mayors from Latin America, Europe and the Mediterranean region, set up with the aim of promoting political debate and the exchange of experiences and strategies for local governability focused on the model for future cities and their integration into their respective territories. This event falls within a series of activities presented by GOBERNA-CIUDAD, an initiative led by Barcelona Provincial Council, the International and Ibero-American Foundation for Administration and Public Policies (FIIAPP) and the Ortega y Gasset University Research Institute, and aims to foster dialogue and the exchange of knowledge and best practices amongst local governments.

Its ultimate aim is to improve the efficiency and capacity of the local world in order to adapt it to new challenges through political leadership, institutional innovation and the prestige of municipalities beyond their limits. Agora, under the title ‘Strategic challenges for the future of local governance´ is organised into three tables, which will analyse the importance of local governments in the current context. The key factors contributing to local development will be looked at in depth; and successful experiences in collaboration between local governments and civil society will be identified.
